Discovery / Information Gathering
Interview and survey key stakeholders and representative audience members to ascertain messaging goals and site objectives. May include workshops or focus groups.
Heuristic Evaluation
Review site to judge its compliance with recognized usability principles. This is often performed concurrently with reviews of competitor or aspirational sites in a broader web landscape analysis to determine a site’s relative efficacy and to tease out best practices.
Information architecture
Organizing a web site to support communication goals and user information needs. The final deliverable is a schematic site map that shows the pages of a site and their interrelationships.
Wireframes
Visual representation of a site’s template/page types showing navigation, page components, and functionality. Can take the form of static diagrams or clickable pages appropriate for user testing prior to site design.
Usability Testing
Remote or in-person testing of existing, prototype or competitor web sites. Testing may be moderated or unmoderated. Deliverables include test protocol and findings report.
Functional Specifications
Detailed description of a site’s functionality. Used during UI design and development as a guideline for how site components should behave and interact. Often used to define or verify project scope prior to coding.
